Demerol Addiction
Demerol Addiction can develop from extended periods of being on the drug. Demerol is a narcotic analgesic with morphine like properties. Demerol is usually prescribed to help relieve moderate to severe pain and is highly addictive. When the user repeatedly uses Demerol, they build a tolerance to the drug which can lead to Demerol Addiction. Once an individual develops a mental and physical addiction to the drug, they can no longer function without it. Demerol Addiction is devastating not only physically but mentally as well. Withdrawal symptoms from the drug can begin as soon as 4 to 5 hours after the last dose & can last as long as 7 to 10 days. When an individual is unaware that they may have an addiction, they may respond to the pain of withdrawal by taking another dose. A person going through withdrawal may show signs and symptoms such as Severe anxiety, Insomnia, Profuse sweating, Muscle spasms, Chills, Shivering, and Tremors. The effects of Demerol can be felt as quickly as 10 to 15 minutes after ingestion and may last as long as 2 to 4 hours. If a user has overdosed, they may show signs such as Bluish discoloration of the skin, Cold and clammy skin, Coma or extreme sleepiness, Limp, Weak muscles, Low blood pressure, Slow heartbeat, and Troubled or slowed breathing. Demerol Addiction is a life threatening illness and someone with an addiction should seek treatment immediately. Also remember it does not take a long period of time on the drug to develop an addiction. In fact, Demerol Addiction can actually happen rather fast because of the drugs fast acting, morphine like qualities. It actually binds opiate receptors in the brain, blocking out pain signals.
