Ativan Addiction

Ativan Addiction is a very common drug addiction due to the increase in availability of prescription drugs. Long term users typically develop a tolerance for the drug which will cause an increase in dosage to get to the desired effect. Physical & psychological dependence can occur causing it to become hard to quit taking it.

Ativan is usually a second choice drug when a users first choice isn’t readily available. It is also used as a “downer” drug after using a stimulant such as ecstasy or cocaine. Ativan Addiction will typically cause users to see many different doctors trying to get prescriptions. Since Ativan triggers the brains reward system & with the promise of reward so intense, it causes the user to crave it more which in turn will cause a user’s activities to center around taking the drug. Ativan (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine & mild tranquilizer, sedative, & central nervous system depressant.

Some signs of Ativan Addiction are a reduced level of consciousness or not fully aware of the user’s present surroundings, possible memory impairment, acting inappropriately out of control, &/or dizziness. Also, you can look for signs such as a rapid increase in the amount of the drug needed, frequent refills before the quantity ordered has been used, & be aware that anyone addicted may engage in “doctor shopping,“ moving from doctor to doctor in order to get multiple prescriptions for the medication. Ativan Addiction can result in overdoses with symptoms ranging from ataxia, hypotonic, & hypotension to stages 1-3 coma, & in some rare cases, even death.

Ativan Addiction is extremely hard to overcome & almost always requires the help of a counselor or specialist trained in drug rehabilitation.
