Crack Addiction
Crack Addiction is one of society’s biggest problems. A person with a Crack Addiction will do just about anything to get the drug. This problem not only affects the user in every way, but a Crack Addiction will affect a user’s loved one’s leaving them confused and living in a world of chaos and not understanding at all what’s going on. “Crack” is a solid form of freebased form cocaine. It gets it’s nickname from the snapping & cracking it makes when it’s heated & smoked.
Crack’s ease of concealment, wide availability, convenience, and low cost has increased its use over the years. In the 70’s cocaine was considered a “status” drug and was expensive. The introduction of crack as a cheaper, more widely available drug made it a drug of choice for many user’s especially since it’s smoked not snorted or injected which are typical signs most people associate with a “junkie”. Crack is probably the most addictive substance that has been devised so far. Crack is inhaled and rapidly absorbed through the lungs, into the blood, and goes straight to the brain. It greatly increases the chances of overdosing and poisoning leading to coma, convulsions, and death. The rapid rush of intense pleasure lasting 5-7 minutes quickly leaves causing depression and the need for more of the drug to relieve it. This vicious cycle then becomes a Crack Addiction. A user suffering from crack withdrawal may show various signs including, but not limited to Agitation, Depression, Intense craving for the drug, Extreme fatigue, Anxiety, Angry outbursts, Lack of motivation, Nausea and vomiting, Shaking, Irritability, Muscle pain, and Disturbed sleep. The increased risk of overdose with crack is perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the drug. The signs of overdose with crack are typically milder than the signs of over dose with other drugs. A user that may have overdosed may show signs such as a very rapid heart beat and hyperventilation which are often accompanied by a feeling of impending death.
If a user with Crack Addiction is pregnant, the physical and mental side effects for the fetus are overwhelming. A fetus can suffer from Seizures or strokes, Cerebral palsy, Mental retardation, Vision and hearing impairments, Urinary tract abnormalities, Autism, and Learning disabilities.
